It’s no longer a secret that most department store products have harmful chemicals and fragrances in them. Even baby products that we hope would be safe for babies can be quite harmful on their little bodies. Fragranced lotions and body washes can mess with their hormones and lead to a variety serious conditions later in life. When it comes to our sweet babies, we want to be confident that what we are exposing them too is pure, natural, and safe! Yet, with all the “green-washing” that is out there, what can know is safe? Well, for me, I try to keep it as basic as possible. I have long since stopped buying baby shampoos and lotions. I simply make my own (with very little extra time needed). *See recipe below for my favorite moisturizing baby soap.*
Baby Soap Recipe:
In a small baby bath or sink with warm water add the following:
- 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil
- 1/2 teaspoon liquid castile soap (I use the unscented castile soap by Dr. Bronners and love it!)
- 5 drops of pure lavender essential oil (I get mine from Azure Standard to bypass using an MLM)
Why Coconut Oil?
I add coconut oil to my baby’s bath to add moisture to their sensitive, and often dry skin. Also, this step saves me from having to rub baby down in lotion after bath time. Because coconut oil is safe for consumption, it is safe for baby’s skin – this is a general rule I try to follow!
Why Castile Soap?
Castile soap is one of the most natural and safe soaps one can use. Dr. Bronners brand has an unscented baby soap that I use for baby (and many other things around my house!). This soap is so safe, it is even biodegradable. Safe for baby and the planet. (Which is why this is my go-to soap for camping and backpacking.)
Why Lavender?
Any baby-safe essential oil would do here… However, I prefer lavender because it is one of my favorite scents, and because of its calming affects. Lavender is the perfect oil for those baths right before bed (or anytime in my book!). I prefer to bypass using an MLM and purchase my essential oils through Azure Standard.
